Organisation on a mission to provide better vision for Tembisa schoolchildren

Vision 4 Change visited Shukumani Primary School in Tembisa on 2 and 5 June to provide free eye screening and tests to schoolchildren.

The non-profit organisation aims to improve vision and hearing of children in disadvantaged areas.

With funding from Medtronic, a company which specialises in medical technology, services, and solutions, Vision 4 Change performed eye screens and tests on 672 children at Shukumani Primary School.

Out of the 672, 13 children were identified to be in need of prescription spectacles. Director of Vision 4 Change, Suzelta Viljoen said their vision had a great impact on the children’s lives whose parents might not have had means to access an optometrist.

“A lot of children have potential but because of poor eyesight, they can’t participate in sports. As soon as they get spectacles, however, their marks improve and they are able to take part in sporting activities.”

Vision 4 Change went back to Shukumani Primary School on 13 June and children were fitted with their prescription spectacles in the presence of their parents.

“By seeing a better, brighter future, they can now develop to their full potential. We want to thank Medtronic for helping us to improve lives.”
