School holidays: 9 gratifying, non-digital things for kids to do

1. Rearrange the furniture in a room


You can refresh a room just by moving the furniture into new positions. Try moving the couch to a different wall, then moving the entertainment centre elsewhere. Move your bed to a different position, then move the rest of the furniture to suit the new configuration.

2. Have a yard sale


Hosting a yard sale or garage sale is a great excuse for cleaning out unwanted clutter and is potentially lucrative as well. It’s also something the whole family can participate in.

3. Teach yourself how to juggle

All you really need is three oranges and to watch the video below. Not only is it a fun activity to learn, it’s something to pull out of your sleeve as a party trick.

4. Write a gratitude list

Sometimes it’s just a matter of noticing how much we have to be grateful for. Take notice of all the big obvious things like a roof over your head as well as those things that seem trivial, but that help to make your life great and enjoyable.

5. Visit a free museum or art gallery

Many cities and towns have free educational attractions, such as museums and art galleries. Make an effort to enjoy these free attractions.

6. Practice origami

All you need is some scrap paper and time. Start with the simple things, like birds, then you can try harder stuff like flowers. A well-made origami piece constructed from interesting paper can be a beautiful decoration.

7. Do a neighbourhood cleanup

Adult supervision required. Walk through your neighbourhood with a trash bag and a pair of gloves, and pick up the litter. Not only is it a pleasant way to get exercise, it also beautifies your surrounding area, not just for your own enjoyment, but for everyone. If you want to really get into it, invite people that live near you to get involved as well and make an event out of it.

8. Try a basic meditation technique

Meditation is a spectacular way to relax after the stress of exams. Learning how to meditate can make a big difference in effectively dealing with stress and anxiety.

9. Help an elderly or disabled friend or neighbour

There’s always a person or two in your life that could use a helping hand, but often are too proud to ask. One great way to bridge this gap is to just stop by and visit and pay attention – if they need something, you’ll usually find out. Then just volunteer to do it and get started on the task.

Quite often, you’ll find that it’s the simple things that really help – reaching something on a high shelf or managing a simple household task. A little effort can make a huge difference. Few things can make you feel more fulfilled than helping someone you care about in their moment of need.
