A gem in Midrand

An underground tour of the Mapatiza mine.

If you are one of the hundreds of families who have been settling in the Midrand area every month, here’s a real ‘gem’ of a place to visit in the Crowthorne area.

The children can visit a replica of an underground mine and learn about gemstone mining and experience a huge variety of African gemstones being sorted and polished. The Mapatiza mine tours are safe – everybody has to wear a safety hat – and interesting as the guides usually add their own personal touch and experiences as visitors weave their way through colourful underground chambers and passages.

Once outside, they can view the outside mine-run and sit in a huge kiddies scratch patch and collect gems and many other polished and uncut stones. Playground equipment and a go-cart cycle track add to the fun of the underground tour facility.

“The bookings for the school tours have been increasing every week since the spring weather has finally arrived and there is a lot of interest and visits from the homeschooler and pre-schoolers as well,” said Marie Furmeier, owner of the Gecko/Mapatiza mine facility on Mercury Avenue.

The venue also boasts one of the largest jewellery showrooms in Africa, Gecko Jewellers World of Gemstones, which operates under PGM Gem Trading. PGM owns several gemstone mines throughout Africa and is the only company in Africa that not only mines its own stones but also designs and manufactures its own range of designer jewellery.

Besides a shopping experience, the showroom offers an educational experience and showcases the amazing range of the ‘Big 5’ gemstones which are diamond, sapphire, emerald, ruby and tanzanite. But you can see a whole lot more including amethyst, citrine, fluorite, lapis lazuli, obsidian, tourmaline, opal, zircon, peridot, garnet, topaz, turquoise, aquamarine, agate, carnelian, jasper, onyx, crystal quartz, rose quartz and South Africa’s very own tiger’s eye.

The prices are direct to the public, making the purchase of a sterling silver or gold piece of jewellery even more attractive. So if you like semi-precious stones this is the place to go.
