New Year’s day in jail for woman accused of perjury

Ivory Park police arrested a woman for perjury on New Year's day.

A 41-year-old Ivory Park woman spent New Year’s day in jail after she allegedly falsely accused her husband of pointing a firearm at her.

According to the police, the woman opened a case of domestic violence on December 31. However, she returned to the police station the following day and confessed that she had made a false accusation. She also admitted that her husband did not own a firearm.

“It appears that the woman and the husband had a fight but, thinking that she could give her story more weight, the woman introduced the pointing of a firearm angle, something that she later admitted did not happen,” said Ivory Park Police Station spokesperson Captain Bernard Matimulane.

The woman has been charged with perjury and will appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court to face her charges. Acting station commander for Ivory Park Police Station, Colonel Baba Mpotoane, said he was disappointed by the woman’s lies.

“Victims of crimes and any other person wanting to open a case at a police station must stick to the truth and nothing else. Lies create unnecessary wastage and unintended victims.”

Mpotoane warned that anyone found making a false statement to the police under oath will be legally dealt with when found.
