First matric class of Glen Austin High excels

Latorla Thlaka is happy with her five distinctions.

Glen Austin High School’s very first matric class – the Class of 2017 – obtained an impressive 100 per cent pass rate.

The school executive Michelle Robertson could not contain her excitement over the results. “We are so thrilled. We made our learners work very hard on weekends and every school holiday. We focused more on academics and it has paid off.”

Out of the 23 matriculants, the school obtained 18 distinctions, 17 bachelors, five diplomas and one higher certificate.

The top achiever Latorla Thlaka obtained five distinctions in Afrikaans, life orientation, mathematics, accounting and economics. Oluwademilade Osikoya obtained four distinctions in computer studies, physical science, geography and life science. Amanda Saunyama received distinctions in isiZulu, business studies and economics.

Thlaka said she was overwhelmed with joy after receiving her results and attributed her achievements to her family. “I studied throughout the year. My family was very supportive. Each family member had a role in my success. My little sister made me green tea and my parents helped me with my studies,” said Thlaka.

She has enrolled at a flight academy in Benoni to become a pilot. “I currently don’t have the funds to complete the qualification but with God anything is possible.”

Amanda Saunyama is proud of her three distinctions.

Oluwademilade Osikoya is very pleased with his four distinctions.
