The film will chronicle the star’s rise to fame and how she became one of the country’s most iconic musicians for over three decades.
Bongani Fassie, her son, is set to be the co-executive producer of the film. Production will begin in February with shooting taking place in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The film will hit cinemas in 2019.
Fassie died on 9 May 2004 after she had slipped into a coma brought on by an asthma attack. The post mortem revealed that she had overdosed on cocaine on the night of her collapse in her house in Buccleuch. This caused her coma, and she stopped breathing resulting in brain damage from the lack of oxygen.
She was one of the SA artists who reached multi-platinum album status during and after apartheid.
She left an indelible mark on the hearts of her fans worldwide. Fans took to Twitter to speculate on who should play her in the film.
