Metro police have warned Midrand motorists to be vigilant after a woman was allegedly attacked by stone throwers on 28 January at the Olifantsfontein Bridge on the N1 highway.

The spokesperson for Metro police, Edna Mamonyane said motorists should not pull off the road when attacked.

“If you are being attacked don’t stop because that would allow the perpetrators an opportunity to rob you of your personal belongings. We would also like to advise motorists not to swerve their car as that may cause accidents,” she said.

This is after Khadeeja Gani’s car sunroof was hit by rocks thrown from the bridge. She posted about it on her Facebook page and warned people to be safe. She said she was happy to be in a convoy with her family when the incident took place in the early evening.

The spokesperson for the Midrand police, Warrant Officer Mmakgomo Semono said although a case was not opened, the police had patrolled the area after hearing about the incident.

“I personally went to the spot near the said bridge and couldn’t find any suspects. The patrolling team also went to the area,” he said.

Mamonyane warned that the perpetrators mostly stand on pedestrian bridges during the evening and early morning to prey on their victims. “We have been working with the provincial traffic department and the provincial police to monitor hotspots on the N12 but the culprits move to other areas.

“When attacked, as long as the person is not injured they must drive to the nearest police station.”
