Preserving our wildlife

A wildlife rehabilitation centre, Friends of Free Wildlife (FFW) is a non-profit organisation situated in Kyalami.

The centre is calling on the community to volunteer at the facility as well as attend the orientation talks on a monthly basis. The next talk will be held on 17 March.

Margi Brocklehurst, the chief executive officer of FFW, said the facility is fully permitted by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Recreation and Development (Gdard).

“Our permits allow us to rescue and receive orphaned and injured wildlife from anywhere in South Africa and release them in appropriate areas,” said Brocklehurst.

FFW is a community-based volunteer organisation which relies heavily on donations and sponsors from people and companies who want to make a difference in protecting and caring for wildlife.

“We are supported by a variety of vets and one of the most important ones is the Bryanston Avian, Exotic and Small Animal Clinic which deals with most of our wildlife.”

Brocklehurst said she hopes the facility will be able to give advice on wildlife in schools and other public areas as a form of educating the community.
