Sector 5’s high crime levels

Midrand’s Sector 5 has released a highlight of its challenges, which are mainly as a result of high levels of crime in the area.

The sector covers the area between Allandale Road (M39) to 16th Avenue near New Road.

“In Sector 5 we have been privileged to have business people, security companies and mall personnel coming together to fight crime and challenges as a community. This sector has a high density of visitors daily coming to work from across the province and our neighbouring suburbs and townships,” said the chairperson for Sector 5, Teboho Semmelink.

“To this end, we, of course, find ourselves with the predicament of high crime rates, as our visitors become victim to opportunists from outside our area and within. In fact, it is reported that our sector has one of the highest crime rates in Midrand.”

Semmelink said she hopes the high crime levels in her sector will be short-lived because they are currently implementing initiatives to try and fight crimes such as burglaries of businesses and homes, theft of motor vehicles, robbery with firearms and common robberies, among others.

“These criminals’ actions are of course a direct result of drugs and alcohol abuse in our sector.”

The high crimes spots include, according to Semmelink, the Old Pretoria Main Road(R101), Richards Road, Le Roux Avenue, Alexandra Avenue, New Road, Allandale Road, Church Street, 16th Road, Nupen Crescent, N1 freeway, 15th Road, Grand Central Boulevard, Gallagher Avenue, Suttle Avenue, Roan Crescent and the corner of Richards Road and Gallagher Avenue. People have been urged to be vigilant and alert always when walking or driving through these hotspots.

“It is our plea that the community report all crime, no matter how small, including the date, time, correct street or place of the crime. The more information the police and security receive, the faster they can apprehend the culprits.”

The sector plans to curb crime by means of getting more vehicles assigned to the sector as well as placing cameras around the sector, and have requested all businesses in the area to participate in this project.

“Each person who makes a call or assists with the apprehension of criminals makes our area a safer and a more enjoyable environment to be in and bring up our children in as well.”
