Christ Church College children receive a lesson on corrosion

Bethy Frost, Zoe Roediger and Kirsten Wood are all-smiles at the Corrosion Institute of South Africa.

In a celebratory spirit of the upcoming Worldwide Corrosion Awareness Day on 24 April, the Corrosion Institute of South Africa hosted 50 children from the Midrand Christ Church College to educate them about corrosion and its effects.

Joe Schultz, Masimbulele Mesatjwa, Kwano Pila and Taona Makamure excited after the corrosion awareness presentation.

The Grade 7 learners were given a presentation by a paint specialist and an assessor, Bob Millenaar at the institute’s premises in Glen Austin on 5 April.

Course administrator at the institute, Linda Hinrichsen said that because of the school holidays, few schools were available to attend the presentations. However, she has invited more schools to attend the celebration, which will be held on 20 April instead of the actual day which is on 24 April.

“The aim is to raise awareness about corrosion as it also costs the country a lot of money,” she said.

Teacher of the Grade 7 class, Jeremy Frost said although corrosion was not part of their studies, it was a good experience for the learners.

“It was good for them to be introduced to the industry – to give them an idea of a career path they may want to follow,” he said.

One of the learners, Daniel Beyleveld said it was a good lesson which taught him more about corrosion. “They explained it in detail and got into the basics, including the more serious aspects of corrosion,” he said.

Seth van Wijk, Bryce Lepaterel, Daniel Naidoo, Daniel Beyleveld and Matthew Blake.

Daniel Naidoo said he liked the fact that there were demonstrations which made it easier for him to understand. “The demonstrations were self-explanatory and easier than doing theory. I got to understand about corrosion a lot better.”

Schools which would like to attend the Corrosion Awareness Day may contact 010 224 0761.
