Old infrastructure is reason for the Halfway House water shortage

Persistent water problems, especially in Halfway House and Halfway Gardens over the past few years have been due to ageing infrastructure.

Recurring water shortages have left residents high and dry dating back to September 2014, where areas including Halfway House were without water for days, due to a power cut at the main pumping station in Eikenhof.

In November 2015, residents of Kyalami went without water for two days following a burst water pipe on Cactus Road. A burst water pipe in Long Acres, caused flooding at one of the homes in Kyalami in November 2016. When this happened, Johannesburg Water was implementing water restrictions to curb water usage from some reservoirs that were experiencing high consumption.

The Greater Midrand area suffered a huge blow in January this year caused by a burst pipe on the Rand Water main line affecting Midrand, Kyalami, Ivory Park, Noordwyk, Vorna Valley, Rabie Ridge, President Park, Ebony Park Grand Central and Carlswald.

A month later, in March, residents of Halfway House experienced days without water due to two burst pipes. On the morning of 27 April, there were water shortages again until later in the afternoon. The following day there was no water at all for the entire day.

A resident, Nancy Sewbachane said they spent the public holiday without water. “We had this same issue last weekend. It’s really getting out of control because it feels like we can do nothing while we are home. It’s becoming so frustrating that we can’t handle this issue of no water every second or third day,” she said.

The spokesperson for Johannesburg Water, Eleanor Mavimbela, said the shortages are as a result of recurring burst pipes, mainly around Halfway Gardens Ext 4. “The bursts are caused by ageing infrastructure. We are in a procurement process to replace sections which are adversely affected by this.”
