Free ECD centre in Ivory Park

Ntombikayise Mdinisi and Nobuhle Ndhlovu are two of the 25 Ivory ark children chosen by Save A Kidz Life.

Reshma Moodley and Micheal Akpan, two of the founders of Save A Kidz Life, opened a new facility in Lusaka Ext 7 in Ivory Park, Midrand on 5 May.

The opening was attended by the main speaker, Ward 79 councillor Thomas Maluleka.

“The facility is free and currently has 25 children under strictly under six years of age, of which will be provided with breakfast, lunch and snacks as well as taught under ECD education. The facility runs from 8am to 2pm,” said Moodley and added that they will be launching a similar facility in Mamelodi for 50 children in July 2018.

Moodley explains that the initiative for this event came about when Brian Khumalo, while he was at his work in Edenvale, overheard representatives of Save A Kidz Life discussing their need to find a space where they could build a facility for disadvantaged children.

“Mzwakhe Mofolo and Brian Khumalo previously had a container situated on the same property [as the current facility], where children used to come and sit the whole day with no education or food, besides a safe roof over their head during the day to play.

Mzwakhe’s mother and owner of the property, Agnes Kgolopo Mofolo, said she was very excited when she was approached by Save A Kidz Life to be a part of the initiative by allowing the facility to be built inside her yard.

“I am someone who works for the development of the community, therefore when I was approached by the organisation, I was very happy that they were able to identify me and present their idea to me because [it] is a step in the right direction in changing the lives of disadvantaged families, especially children,” said Mofolo who does not benefit personally from the facility. She concluded by saying that she does it for the benefit of the children.
