South Africans respond to SABC’s screening of ‘Miners Shot Down’

16 August will be the 6th year anniversary of the tragic Marikana Massacre that saw 44 miners gunned down by the SA police while they were on strike for wages at Lonmin Mines. President Cyril Ramaphosa was a non-executive director of Lonmin and at the centre of this tragedy after demanding that “concomitant action” must be taken against the miners (the action ‘naturally associated’ with a situation like this).  He also referred to them as “plainly dastardly criminals”.  Police opened fire and many miners were killed. In Parliament, members of opposition parties still hold him directly responsible for the mass killings.

Miners Shot Down is an International Emmy Award-winning documentary that captures the events of Marikana and was supposed to air on 13 August on SABC 1 but instead aired for the first time on 6 August at 9pm after a sudden schedule change. SABC has been accused of bias towards ANC for changing the schedule.

The Amandla.mobi group, who have been pushing for the screening of the film, criticised the schedule change saying to The South African publication that this change was part of a bigger crisis unfolding at the SABC and that it threatens to undermine the victory to get Miners Shot Down screened on SABC. They were nevertheless pleased with the outcome.

Late last Tuesday evening, SABC allowed Cyril Ramaphosa to address the nation about his party’s plans for land expropriation. The move to reschedule and the editing of the documentary has made people believe that the SABC is protecting Ramaphosa.

Many people, however, still managed to catch the documentary and voiced their views on Twitter:
